PUPPY CARE
It's a great deal of fun and games when a new puppy arrives in the household. It is vitally important that your new addition to the family is brought in for a health check and to receive the essential vaccinations to protect them against viruses such as Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus, which otherwise can often be lethal or leave serious repercussions.
Pups seen at BVH receive the following FREE items at their 1st visit:
- Frontline Top Spot Plus
- Pet Insurance (6 weeks accident cover)
- Dermcare Natural Shampoo
- Hills special puppy starter pack including a free sample of puppy food
We also give you important information about:
- Worming
- Desexing
- Heartworm disease
- Fleas and Ticks
- Training including Puppy School
- Microchipping
- How to deal with common behavioral issues
Below is our standard recommendations for the first twelve months of your new puppy’s life:
- 6 weeks: Give an intestinal worming treatment.
Keep in the backyard until 10 days after the 12 week vaccines. - 8 weeks: Give an intestinal worming treatment.
It’s also time for the 1st puppy vaccine, if your puppy has not had any
vaccines from the breeder or pet shop. - 10 weeks: Give an intestinal worming treatment.
- 12 weeks: Give an intestinal worming treatment.
From the Puppy Pack, give the free Heartgard chewable tablet and
apply the free Frontline Plus. The Heartgard Plus chewable tablet starts
you on heartworm prevention and Frontline Plus is now applied monthly.
Your puppy needs to visit us for its 12 week vaccine. - 16 weeks: Come in for a combined heartworm and intestinal worming chewable
tablet called Guardian.
Bring the puppy because we love to see them and give them treats, plus we like to weigh them. All puppies will now have a Guardian chewable treatment every month until we see them again for desexing at 5-6 months. - 5-6 months: We will send you a letter when it is time for desexing. If you decide to desex we will discuss giving an injection to prevent against heartworm. Even if you are not going to desex you dog (although we highly recommend it), your dog can still have the injection at this time.
- 7 months: Give an intestinal worming treatment.
- 10 months: Give an intestinal worming treatment.
- 13 months: Give an intestinal worming treatment.
- 15 months: Your dog is now due for an annual vaccination and heartworm injection
We will send you a reminder letter.
You now give an intestinal worming treatment every 3 months and once a year,
come and see the vet for an annual health check, vaccines and heartworm injection.
Frontline Plus, Guardian and Intestinal worming treatments are available from the counter, just ask one of the friendly nurses at BVH.
