UPSET STOMACHS

Pets with vomiting &/or diarrhoea

Pets may develop diarrhoea due to a change in the diet, infections, worms, stress or a combination of these.

Management of upset stomachs

  • No food for 12-24 hours.
  • Give a re-hydration tonic e.g. Lectade or water.
  • Do not give milk as it aggravates diarrhoea.
  • Over the next 4- 5 days, feed a diet of:
    • Boiled rice
    • Boiled chicken (remove all skin fat)
    • Cottage cheese or natural live yoghurt
    • Scrambled or boiled eggs & dry toast
  • Feed small meals often (4-5 times a day)
  • Allow the pet to rest.
  • Once the diarrhoea has resolved, slowly re-introduce normal food over 3-4 days.
  • If your pet’s diarrhoea does not respond within 48 hours or if it is:
  • Vomiting or depressed
    • Losing weight
    • Straining to pass faeces
    • Passing blood &/or mucous
