UPSET STOMACHS
Pets with vomiting &/or diarrhoea
Pets may develop diarrhoea due to a change in the diet, infections, worms, stress or a combination of these.
Management of upset stomachs
- No food for 12-24 hours.
- Give a re-hydration tonic e.g. Lectade or water.
- Do not give milk as it aggravates diarrhoea.
- Over the next 4- 5 days, feed a diet of:
- Boiled rice
- Boiled chicken (remove all skin fat)
- Cottage cheese or natural live yoghurt
- Scrambled or boiled eggs & dry toast
- Feed small meals often (4-5 times a day)
- Allow the pet to rest.
- Once the diarrhoea has resolved, slowly re-introduce normal food over 3-4 days.
- If your pet’s diarrhoea does not respond within 48 hours or if it is:
- Vomiting or depressed
- Losing weight
- Straining to pass faeces
- Passing blood &/or mucous
- Losing weight
