HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN PETS

Just like people, dogs and cats suffer from high blood pressure.

Causes

• Kidney failure
  
• Hyper-thyroidism in cats (an overactive thyroid gland which acts like the choke throttle in a car- see opposite)
  
• Primary high blood pressure i.e. there is no underlying illness present.
  
• Heart disease

Complications

• Detached retinas causing sudden blindness (reversible if treated within 24 hours)
  
• Strokes
  
• Worsening of kidney failure

We perform Senior Pet Health checks on our older patients. Part of this programme involves running tests which indicate the presence of high blood pressure.
