HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN PETS
Just like people, dogs and cats suffer from high blood pressure.
Causes
- Kidney failure
- Hyper-thyroidism in cats (an overactive thyroid gland which acts like the choke throttle in a car- see opposite)
- Primary high blood pressure i.e. there is no underlying illness present.
- Heart disease
Complications
- Detached retinas causing sudden blindness (reversible if treated within 24 hours)
- Strokes
- Worsening of kidney failure
We perform Senior Pet Health checks on our older patients. Part of this programme involves running tests which indicate the presence of high blood pressure.
